TORRIGNTON -- On Saturday, (Oct. 16, 2004), the Mayor’s Renaissance Team will meet at Coe Park for the group’s first volunteer event.
Starting at 10:30 a.m., the group of volunteers will plant thousands of tulip and daffodil bulbs at the park as part of its mission to improve the city.
The event is sponsored by Maple Meadows Farms, Home Deport, Wal*Mart and Moscarillos. The businesses donated flower bulbs that will be planted on Saturday and Patrick Herzig, owner of Maple Meadows in Terryville, has agreed to oversee the planting.
Torrington’s Red Lobster restaurant is also sponsoring the event and will donate food and refreshments for volunteers.
Mayor Owen J. Quinn created the Renaissance Team this summer. He hopes the group can eventually do something every month to improve the city.
“This is obviously the beginning of what I hope will be regular events, large and small, that will contribute to improving our great city,” Quinn said. “We won’t be able to see the benefit of Saturday’s event until spring, but I can’t wait.”
Most of the volunteers signed up for the team during the summer’s Heritage Day celebration.
Anyone wishing to take part in the bulb planting can call the Mayor’s Office to sign up.
